The toilet ventilation
Even composting toilets produce odors – significantly less than conventional toilets, but not entirely avoidable. Therefore, the crucial question is how and where these odors are controlled.
The SETRENLO® toilet's ventilation system is integrated directly above the solids container. Air is extracted precisely where odors originate – not into the room itself.
This keeps the interior odor-free without the need for additional products such as litter.

This is how toilet ventilation works
The ventilation system consists of two central components that are coordinated with each other:
-
a fan unit
-
an activated carbon filter
The fan unit contains a powerful yet very quiet fan. Integrated vibration dampers prevent vibrations from being transmitted to the housing.
The fan continuously draws air from inside the toilet. This air then flows through vegan activated carbon granules, where odors are reliably absorbed. The purified and odorless air is then released to the outside in a controlled manner.
Just like with a conventional toilet, you simply place the toilet paper inside the SETRENLO® toilet. This eliminates the need for a separate container, which often produces unpleasant odors. The toilet paper also absorbs any remaining moisture.
Thanks to this combination of effective toilet ventilation and the toilet paper , it is not necessary to use litter in the SETRENLO® toilet.
Why good toilet ventilation is more than just a fan
Reliable toilet ventilation is not simply a matter of a fan and a filter. For it to work effectively on a daily basis, all components must be precisely coordinated.
The fan used must:
-
be powerful enough to extract odours directly at the source
-
be quiet enough not to be noticed in the living area
-
be compatible with the existing pipe diameters and airways
-
work reliably even with additional resistance
Insufficient power means that odours are not consistently removed. Too much power generates unnecessary noise and airflow noise. Neither is a solution in everyday life.
Then there is the activated carbon.
Not all activated carbon is suitable for use in a separation toilet – especially not under real operating conditions.
In mobile and self-sufficient use, factors such as:
-
Heat
-
Dust
-
Dryness
-
High humidity
-
Changing usage
Many types of activated carbon quickly lose their effectiveness under these conditions.
That is why the fan power, air flow, pipe cross-section and vegan activated carbon granulate from SETRENLO® were developed, tested and coordinated as a complete system.
All components were tested under real conditions – not in the laboratory, but in daily use. The result is a ventilation system that not only works in theory, but also permanently and reliably in everyday use.
What does that mean in everyday use?
The SETRENLO® toilet's ventilation system works automatically in the background.
No intervention is required during normal operation.
During use, the fan continuously maintains a slight negative pressure in the area of the solids container. Odors are reliably removed without being consciously noticed.
In everyday life, this means:
-
no consideration of ventilation
-
no settings
-
no continuous manual movements
The system is designed to operate stably over a long period of time – even under changing temperatures, dust or humidity.
When is maintenance necessary?
The activated carbon filter is already filled with vegan activated carbon from SETRENLO®. The only regular maintenance required is replacing the activated carbon.
This should be done approximately once a year. The replacement is easy to perform and can be done without special tools.
No further interventions or settings are required.
Replacing the activated charcoal is that easy.
The toilet vent is located inside the body, on the back wall. To replace the activated carbon, you have to remove the entire activated carbon container and unscrew it.
The activated carbon canister is located in the center of the toilet vent and can be easily pulled out from the bottom. This can be done from the front or the back, depending on how the toilet is installed.

To access it from the front, you need to remove the urine tank (if present) and the solids container. It's even easier if you also remove the separator insert.

The activated carbon filter has a screw cap on one side. Simply unscrew this to access the activated carbon. You can dispose of the used carbon in your regular trash. Then, fill it with the new one.

O-rings must be greased.
Before inserting the container, please ensure that the O-rings on the left and right are still intact. To ensure you can easily slide the container back in, please lightly grease the O-rings. However, do not use any mineral oil-based greases. Coconut oil, petroleum jelly, or silicone grease are perfectly sufficient.
Important : The container must be able to be inserted easily and without excessive force . Otherwise, the O-ring will be damaged.
